Medicare and COVID-19

The COVID 19 epidemic has certainly created a new normal that we Americans will live with for the foreseeable future. Many factors are contributing to the situation and all Americans are concerned about their safety and health.

No demographic group has suffered more than seniors. We are the most venerable due to age and perhaps current illnesses or the vulnerability to become sick due to age. This blog is just an informative piece meant to make sure seniors know their rights and options during this difficult time.

CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has issued a bulletin explaining our options for those on Medicare.

As most know, the AEP (Annual Election Period) and OEP (Open Enrollment Period) have long gone and will not come back until the latter part of the year. Any senior also knows they have a SEP (Special Enrollment Period) based on certain circumstances that allow them to make changes to their Medicare choices made during a specific period. CMS has added a COVID 19 election period and this blogger thought our seniors should be informed.

Who is eligible? Those that meet the following criteria and:

  • Reside, or resided at the start of the incident period, in an area for which FEMA has declared an emergency or a major disaster and has designated affected counties as being eligible to apply for individual or public level assistance. CLARK COUNTY, NV was declared an emergency on March 12th this year.
  • Had another valid election period at the time of the incident period, and.
  • Did not make an election during their other valid election period.

This allows anyone who resides in Clark County NV to make changes to their Medicare plan. The incident period began on January 20, 2020. The declaration was announced on March 12, 2020

Timeframe: Effective immediately, individuals meeting the requirements listed above can enroll, dis-enroll, or switch MAPD plans until May 31, 2020.

This is a very narrow window of time and this blogger was informed recently that COVID 19 SEP was created. It applies to a small group but this needs to get out to the public immediately.
